What is an EV Charging Station?
Unlike gas vehicles, electric vehicles are charged at an EV charging station. These stations are located at a variety of places such as grocery stores, office buildings, shopping malls, and can even be installed in your home. Depending on the size of your cars battery and the level of charger you choose to install, the amount of time that it will take for your electric vehicle to charge will vary. The different levels of EV chargers are explained in detail below.
Types of Electric Vehicle Chargers
Level 1: (120V) Can be plugged into any regular 120v home outlet. It is a low level charger which will give you around 1kW of power—similar to a trickle charger. This charging adapter typically comes with the vehicle when purchased however it is not the optimal solution for charging as it takes over 8 hours to achieve a full charge.
Level 2: (240V) Anywhere from 3kW to 20kW of power. A typical full charge takes between 3-8 hours.
Level 3: (480V) Also known as DC fast charger, capable of around 20kW> of power, which is enough to achieve a full charge in 20 minutes to 1 hour.
Level 3 Tesla Supercharger: Proprietary connector which offers the ability to charge your Tesla to 50% in approximately 20 minutes. Tesla models S,3, X, and Y are all able to use these chargers.
Every EV on the market can charge in between level 1 and level 2, however not every EV has the capability to use a level 3 charger. It is important that you check the charging compatibility before purchasing an electric vehicle.
